For more than 15 years I’ve been standing at the intersection of design, language, technology, and strategy, trying to cross the streams. Most of the time I didn’t end up covered in marshmallow fluff. I’ve worn a lot of hats — editor, producer, product manager, information architect, designer, programmer, illustrator, animator, teacher, troop leader, psychaitrist — with a slew of terrific companies and institutions — Kitchen Sink Press Tripod.com, DC Comics, AOL, Warner Bros., early-adopter, Parsons, CityTech, Avenues and on.

I make things with code and pixels and sometimes wood and paint and power tools and whatever is lying around. I teach other people to do the same. Around the edges I read like books are going out of style (oh, wait…), ride my bike and play with my kid.

Hey Katy, What Happened to Your Site?

My site perpetually suffers from Shoemaker’s Children syndrome. I spend a lot of my time making other people’s sites, or teaching people to make their own sites, and there just is never much left to maintain my own.

So, as an experiment, I’m replacing my woefully  out-of-date professional Web site with this here WordPress site, and I’m starting with the beautifully bare bones theme Toolbox developed by the excellent folks at Automattic.

My plan is to tweak and style and add content to this site as I have time. It’s pretty much the opposite of how I would advise any student or client to build their site, but hey, maybe I’ve been doing this long enough now that I can break my own rules.
